THE DRIVER INC IMPACT
Driver Inc. has made an uneven playing field in the trucking industry and is creating unfair and illegal disadvantages. Those using the scheme are siphoning up to $1 billion a year in tax revenues away from vital Canadian services and infrastructure and into the underground economy while circumventing important labour, safety and environmental rules.
REAL LIFE CONSEQUENCES
Canada’s truck drivers play a crucial role in making sure that families and business across the country get the goods they need on time. They are integral in keeping supply chains moving, and getting Canadian goods transported to markets around the world.
Driver Inc. is taking advantage of hardworking drivers and putting them at a disadvantage when it comes to accessing important protections and benefits like sick leave, holiday pay, overtime, and rights on termination of employment.
With the talks of bringing in a federally mandated 10-day paid sick leave, incorporated drivers under the Driver Inc. tax scam are once again being put at a disadvantage. Since these drivers are not registered employees, the participating trucking companies are not required to honour any paid sick leave.

It has been over 5 years since the federal government said they were going to abolish Driver Inc. However, the only real action taken so far was earlier this year when Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) started a pilot program in Ontario.
The pilot program targets known violators of this scheme who operate within the underground economy, who will be inspected, audited, and face regulatory and legal consequences of a variety of labour contraventions.
TAKING ACTION
With the current pilot program, compliant carriers can feel confident in investing in their employees without fear of being undermined by carriers engaged in the myriad of illegal activities the Driver Inc. model is built upon.
This federal government can make immediate change if we are to protect drivers’ rights, supply chains, and Canada’s recovery. We propose a nationwide program that:
